The Project Management Institute (PMI) has made major changes to the PMP^® Exam which is reflected in the new curriculum. Many new topics and methods have been added to the new PMP^® 2021 Exam. Also, new terms have been added to the Exam Content Outline (ECO). PMP^® Exam Content Outline defines what is on the exam and this includes Domains, Tasks, and Enablers. Contrary to popular belief that the PMP^® Exam is still based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide, the PMP^® Exam content outlined in the PMP^® new version is not based on PMBOK Guide.

Unlike the current PMP^® Exam that is based on five (5) existing performance domains which are (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring, and Control), the new PMP^® Exam will be based on only three (3) domains namely, (Process, People, and Business Environment) aimed at testing your knowledge. Question will be based on situational, practical/logical knowledge.

Another major change made by PMI is that the new PMP^® Exam will cover approximately 50% of questions related to Agile and Hybrid approaches. What this means for people who aren’t familiar with Agile and Hybrid approaches is that passing the PMP 2021 Exam will be a little harder and will require more explanatory, instructor-led training, guidance, and strategic teaching from an Authorized Trainer in an ATP – Authorized Training Partner! Previously, it was okay for people to get trained with a Registered Education Provider (REP) but due to inconsistency in the training materials and standards, PMI made a major change to switch from REPs to ATPs to regulate the training materials and guarantee the quality of PMP^® training in various ATPs.

These changes made are not to scare off or discourage PMP^® aspirants nor to make their lives difficult. Keep in mind that PMI makes PMP^® updates and changes every 3 to 5 years after careful research and survey of the industry just to ensure that PMP Certification is constantly relevant to the industry.

PMI laid out requirements that training institutes must meet in order to be approved and issued an approval badge. Also, PMI directed all PMP^® instructors to attend “A 2-day Train-the-Trainer class” and pass after which digital certification badges are issued to successful instructors and regarded as legible to train project managers.
