In 2009 USGBC aimed to accommodate various levels of knowledge so they created a hierarchy of titles, such as LEED Green Associate (LEED GA) and LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) with five different specialties.
Now let us understand the levels of LEED certification and their specialization.
1. LEED Green Associate (LEED GA): It is a foundation course for a beginner who wants to understand the LEED rating system’s basic framework and concepts. Once you gain the basic knowledge of the LEED system, You will demonstrate your ideas and expertise in Green design, construction, and operation. After completing the LEED GA, you can move on to the advanced credentials such as the LEED AP with the specialty.

- The LEED exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions.
- There is no experience required.
- You can take the exam either at the Prometric center or from your home (remotely proctored ).
- The minimum passing score for the exam is 170 marks.
- The certification is valid for only two years. To maintain the credential, you have to collect 15 education hours (three must be LEED-specific) within 2 years of passing the exam.

2. LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) Specialty: This is the advanced level of the leed certifications. Once you pass the LEED GA Exam, you can decide if you want to pursue the LEED AP.
NOTE: It is often advised to pursue the LEED AP after successfully passing the LEED GA as it would add positively to your career advancement.
There are 5 LEED AP Specialties available for different designations. They include:
1. LEED AP Building Design + Construction (BD+C)
2. LEED AP Operations + Maintenance (O+M)
3. LEED AP Interior Design + Construction (ID+C)
4. LEED AP Homes
5. LEED AP Neighborhood Development (ND)

- The LEED exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. You have to complete the exam in 2 hours.
- There is no experience required, but LEED project exposure will help you understand the subject.
- To attain LEED AP Certification, you must have passed the LEED GA exam.
- You can take the exam either at the Prometric center or from home (remotely proctored).
- You must earn a scaled score of 170 or higher to pass the exam.
- You have to collect 30 CE continuing education hours (six must be LEED-specific) within two years of passing the exam.
