Having done your PMP training, are you now planning to apply for the Exam?
Here are a few guidelines on how to report your project experience.
To provide the Project Experience, properly fill up and complete the 2nd section of the online PMP Application Form.
Read the following guidelines on how to fill up the project experience section in your PMP Application: –
1. How do you avoid the rejection of your application?
Before filling up the form and the PMP exam application, it is best to consult your supervisor or project sponsors to see if they can stand in as your reference. Getting support to verify your work experience avoids denial of your application.
2. Do you need to submit documents?
It is not necessary to upload your resume, training certificate, or degree certificate in this process. Keep them in one folder. In the event that you are chosen for an audit, all of those requirements must be uploaded for verification.
3. How can you qualify for the PMP Exam?
As a certified PMP, you must demonstrate your project management expertise and ensure that you meet the required years of work experience as a project manager equivalent to your educational attainment before applying for the PMP exam. You must have also completed a minimum of 35 hours of training in project management.
4. How many project experiences do you need to report?
As per the PMI, it’s not necessary to list all the projects you have been in charge of. It is preferable to fill out the form beginning with your most recent or current project and working your way backward through your professional background. The project can be cumulative or a single project.
Here are your guidelines:
-
-
- If you hold a secondary education degree or a high school diploma, you must demonstrate 60 months of project management experience.
- 36 months of project management experience are required if you hold a bachelor’s degree.
-
5. Do you have an active PMP Application and want to reopen it?
If you applied before and its status is in progress, your data will be converted to the new format. They’ll move from the previous format to the new one, and they might also request that you review everything once more and add a few more drop-down menu choices. If your application was previously approved: This information does not apply to applications that have already been approved.
6. Did the PMI change the exam application process?
The PMI revised the application process for the PMP exam. What remains unchanged is the eligibility criteria.
7. Do you need to provide the number of working hours you spent on the project?
One of the major changes is that you no longer need to specify how many hours are spent in the project management domain (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing).
8. Do I need to provide contact information?
Contact information is no longer necessary in the process of exam application submission.
9. What should I focus on in the eligibility criteria?
Please note that while the eligibility criteria—years of work experience, required training hours, etc.—remain unchanged, the process through which applicants must submit their information has changed and been streamlined. When entering the experience, for instance, months rather than hours will be used. They made it easier by providing a drop-down type selection field.
10. Which project information does PMI require?
Projects can be reported as tangible, intangible, completed, unfinished, overlapping, or not overlapping. In the title of your project, you may use the word, to develop, to construct, to design, or any Power Verbs for Project Management/Supervisory.

To get a concept of how to frame your own to best highlight your abilities, examples of some of our students’ applications are shown below. It is not advisable to duplicate these experience examples in your own application. Always be truthful about your work experience to abide by the code of ethics of PMI to avoid rejection of your exam application or revocation of your PMP certification.
Below is an example of disapproved project experience details:
According to PMI, project descriptions need to include the following:
A one-sentence project objective that is succinct
-
-
- A list of project deliverables subdivided by process areas (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring, and Controlling, and Closing – abbreviations are acceptable IN, PL, EX, MC & CL)
- A concise, one-sentence project result
-
The tasks you led and oversaw on the project should be summarized in project descriptions (e.g. Initiating: develop a project charter, etc.; Planning: Scope definition, etc.; and so on). When all projects are combined, but not for each individual project, project management experience is necessary for each of the process areas. All projects submitted as part of the application process must include project descriptions.
